A fruitless search for a gas leak at a Canberra shopping village became fruitful indeed when firefighters discovered the source.

People were asked to avoid Dickson shops today after a strange smell sparked fears of a gas leak.

No exclusion zone was set up, but firefighters were deployed to search for any danger.

After an hour at the site, the owner of a tenancy above the shops told firefighters a potential source of the smell - a durian fruit.

The fruit is very pungent and the smell can waft some distance.

Two years ago, a durian fruit left in a bin at a University of Canberra library sparked an evacuation.

After a short investigation, firefighters confirmed the fruit was the source of the smell, and left.

Advice to avoid the area is no longer in place.
