NEW DELHI: Amid intense speculations about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting the UP elections, the Congress general secretary has not yet made any decision on taking the electoral plunge. Well-placed sources said that there is no indication yet from the leadership that the general secretary incharge of UP may contest the polls. "As of now, it seems unlikely," a senior leader said.
There have been speculations that Priyanka, who is leading the Congress charge in the state, may join the contestants' list, and the chatter gained ground after she and her brother Rahul Gandhi held a padyatra in the family stronghold of Amethi on December 18. Rahul lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi.
There have also been speculations that Congress is considering a seat in Lakhimpur Kheri for Priyanka. The district hit the headlines recently when a farmers group was run over by a speeding convoy of SUVs, which the police has found to be a deliberate act and which allegedly involved the son of a Union minister hailing from the district. Priyanka had visited the district despite the administration's ban, and she was also arrested in the process.
