England selector Luke Wright has said that Joe Root might need a little more time to settle into the ODIs after a long break from the format. Root, who did not play in ODIs for a year, returned for the New Zealand ODI series but was not able to get the desirable impact scoring six, nought, four and 29 from 4 outings.

Wright, speaking ahead of England's three match series vs Ireland said that Root has asked for a little more time to prove his form going into the ODI World Cup.

"It's great for someone to have that desire to keep wanting to do more," Wright said ahead of the first ODI that is set to be played on 20 September.

"He just wanted a bit more time," added Wright.

"It shows what makes him such a world-class player that when he doesn't feel quite right that he still wants to tinker and do more," he said about Root's mentality.

Zak Crawley is set to captain England for the first time in absence of Jos Buttler. Wright felt that it would be a great chance for the youngsters to learn from Root who has been in terrific form in the longest format of the game.

"It's great for the lads in that squad that Joe will be around so they can learn off him and see how he goes about his business," Wright said.

England dropped Jason Roy from the ODI squad and added Harry Brook. Roy has been given a chance to prove his form and fitness ahead of the ODI World Cup and would hope to make the most of it against Ireland.

"From Jason's point of view, he probably only covers us for an opener," said Wright. "Harry gives us that cover from number one to number six and has obviously been in great form as well.

"It's been an incredibly tough decision but it shows where we're at in English cricket, that there are so many tough decisions."
